Coconut oil is an edible oil that is extracted from the kernel (meat) of the matured coconuts that are harvested from the coconut palm trees. Apart from food and medicine it is widely used in the industry, as well. Due to its high saturated fat content its oxidizing process is slow hence; resistant to rancidification, and can last up to two years without deterioration.

Coconut Oil’s Composition and Benefits

Over the past few decades, coconut oil has been used an all cure for many beauty and dietary related issues. Its powers are strong enough to destroy any microbes, be protozoa, viruses or bacteria. It also provides high-quality fat that is very critical for the body. 50% of the fat in the coconut oil is lauric acid, which is rare in nature. In fact coconut oil contains more lauric acid than any other substance on earth. When lauric acid enters your body, it converts into monolaurin (a monoglyceride) that can destroy lipid-coated viruses like influenza, gram-negative bacteria, protozoa as the giardia lamblia, measles, herpes, and even HIV. It is very useful in the medicinal world, taken both internally and externally.

Since coconut oil consists of MCFAs (medium chain fatty acids), it is easily digested and readily crossed to the cell membranes. The MCFAs immediately get converted by the liver into energy for the body making it an ideal replacement for non-vegetable carbohydrates.

Coconut oil contains saturated fat called lauric acid (MCT) has shown successful signs of increasing the good HDL cholesterol in the blood improving the ratio level in the cholesterol. As discussed coconut oil contains MCT (medium chain triglycerides) in a study done in the year 2009, women were given 2 tablespoons (30 milliliters approximately) of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks. The study showed the women did not gain any weight and had low amounts of abdominal fats, the most difficult fat to lose and the main contributor to heart problems.
